Help me with these physics ideas…Please?

1. Which way will a hand-held helium balloon move in a car that is accelerating forwards? Why?

The trick to all these questions is to remember that the surrounding air in all these systems acts as a moving fluid, just the same as the helium, flame, and water.

1. The helium in the balloon is much less dense than the air inside the car. Therefore, when the car stops, the air in the car continues to move forward for a slight time length longer (inertia) and therefore creates a higher pressure towards the front of the car. Because of this, the helium is then pushed to the back of the car.

2. One would assume that the flame is less dense than air (since a flame is always rising and stays at the top of the candle), in which case the same principle applies as the first case. If the candle moves forward inside a glass chimney, the air around the flame would be pushed towards the back of the chimney (again inertia) and therefore would push the flame forward.
b. If it was rotating, the air surrounding the candle would be pushed back by centripetal force, and the flame would face the other way, ie. towards the center of the radius.

3. Now water is more dense than air, so the weight of water would overcome the air and the surface of water would heighten away from the direction of acceleration (either backwards if moving forward, or away from center if on a rotating platform).
