making some unique menorahs for my friends- any suggestions?

I am making a few menorahs for my close friends- I will breifly outline them, and if you have any suggestions or comments, I’d apperciate it as it might help me do a better job of my work and hopefully inspire others to make a menorah gift for others.
*Does anyone have any suggestions on what i can use for Candle Holders as I don’t want to use nuts if i can get away with it on the designs I can’t hide them.

My first in a travel box menorah like this one http://www.judaica-mall.com/traveling-menorah-16067.htm , only I would have to make it out of food. Any ideas on putting a wood finish to make it look nice and some silver accents?

Second is a book Menorah with a book that has been painted Silver or gold and a Toronto skyline cutout on the back.
Any ideas of how to paint the books, get a shine, etc and keep it relativly flame retardant?
Thanks for everything!!
I’ll have to post some pics once I get it all done- hopefully I don’t dissapoint!

In making a menorah (Hannukiah), you really need to consider flammability. The Candles, once blessed, cannot be extinguished, and must be allowed to burn themselves out. They will burn right down to the menorah.

Wooden menorot/Hannukiot have candle-cups of brass or some other metal. If your “book-menorah” will be made out of a real book, meaning paper, then flammability is even more of a concern.

I suggest visiting a full-service hardware store, go to the miscellaneous hardware section, and bring a standard Hannukah candle with you. Use the candle to see which hardware bits would make good, well-fitting, candle-cups. You would then need to drill and attach these to your menorah/Hannukiah base. You need eight, plus one that is elevated or set forward, for the shammash.
