Changes in Candle Trends
As you watch advertisements on TV and see them in the magazines you can’t help but notice the attempt by companies to corner the market with new air freshening products. While the ideas and products are new and innovative there is nothing that can replace the air freshening power and alluring ambiance of quality scented Candles.
Over the past two decades the candle industry has seen some interesting trend changes. In the 1980′s the concentration was on floral scents followed by an interest in perfumes in the early 1990′s. Soon berry scents were added, then the “baked goods” fragrances of pies, cookies, and cakes. The baked goods have remained a strong selling line to date. Next came the tropical fruits and melon fragrances. The Y2K era saw the addition of special fragrance blends and dawn of the spa scents. Candles with fragrance blends began with names like fresh rain, ocean breeze, and island getaway. Unfortunately, these descriptive names, while being enticing, make it difficult to discern exactly what the candle smells like unless you have it in hand. With massive growth internet shopping and online sales it became necessary to start naming candle blends with less creative titles and more descriptive ones. Now candles with fragrance blends have names like coconut mango spash, sage and citrus, and sandalwood vanilla.
The most recent candle trends have been toward “environmentally friendly” products such as candles made from bees wax, palm wax, and soybean wax. The largest segment of these new “natural” products are Soy Candles. Soybean crops are grown in many areas around the world making it a readily available, renewable resource. Soy Candle advocates claim that they are soot free which is not a true statement. Whenever you have fire you will have some soot due to incomplete combustion. They do seem to put off less soot than paraffin candles but there are a lot of variables involved in burning candles which determine how much soot is produced. Soy candles are also said to burn longer making them more attractive economically.
With the countless ways that candles can be made and changed to fit the times I don’t think that we will be seeing them disappear anytime soon.
