How did you do the Unity Candle Ceremony?

There are so many variations on the Unity Candle Ceremony! I’m getting overwhelmed. I’d like to include my mom and my fiance’s sister (his mom is deceased) in the ceremony…but I’m debating on whether to have them light the tapers before or during the ceremony…?? What’s most common and makes more sense?
